5 out of 5 stars My favorite new toy!   August 30, 2010
Jenraider72 (Northern New Jersey)
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2L8ELEN05ERIF This is a video review for Flo tv. I love this tv. I should have prefaced that with- I love tv in general- but I really do enjoy this device. One thing I neglect to mention in my video, which I feel in all fairness I should disclose in reference to their service agreement. This is the ONLY problem I have at all. They do state that if Flo tv should go under for any reason at all- bankruptcy, whatever- they are not responsible for refunding the money you may have left on any service agreement. You must pay for the service(like cable tv bill) but you pay for x amount of time in advance. I did decide to take the risk and purchase a 2 year agreement which is discounted. I wanted to get the discount price and also pay now while I know I have the money to spend on it. Assuming they stay in business, I will have my portable tv service for 2 years. I also paid an extra $50. at Bestbuy at time of purchasing tv itself to get a 2 year product replacement agreement. Thay will replace it no matter what happens to it- not just electrical malfunction or defect- even if I drop it and it breaks , it's covered. Incidentally, I have dropped it and it still works fine so it's not poorly made. I often watch in the kitchen because others are using the other tv's. I enjoy having prime-time viewing during the daytime as well. I can't always catch these shows at regular air time.I hope you enjoy the tv as much as I do. It's one of the best fun purchases I've made in a long time and I have zero regrets.

4 out of 5 stars Better with Software/Firmware Updates   July 17, 2010

I am and always will be an "early adopter" for any/all tech gadgets. Usually the early adopters, like me, have buyer's remorse...that was the case back in January 2010 when I bought the first FloTV (PTV-350). I paid the original $249 plus the whopping monthly subscription fees too. In a few days I started to notice a serious glitch: the video portion of the broadcasts would go black while the audio continued to play. Initially I thought it must be some kind of screen saver or power management thing, but alas it was a real hardware defect as confirmed by a phone call to FLoTV tech support. BTW the tech support phone number is: 888-993-5688. They are very friendly & courteous support personnel "English-speaking Americans". I learned that FloTV devices are actually made by the cell phone giant HTC, and the flaw with the video was just appearing at the time of my phone call. I was told, in all sincerity, they had no idea how to fix but they were "working on it". Thankfully, I had purchased my FloTV device on Amazon.com and the returns are swift & painless. I cancelled the monthly membership to FloTV subscription and returned the device to Amazon.com, recv'd a full refund within a day or two.

I really liked the device, so I waited six months and ordered a new one (again from Amazon.com "just in case"). The new one arrived in two days and I noticed a huge difference right away. First, the subscription is way down...now it's just $75/year as opposed to the aforementioned $179...so, that works out to $6.25/month HUGE SAVINGS). Secondly, the setup and install/activation is easier now plus the firmware updates are a no-brainer. The video problem that exsisted back in January has been eliminated and it's much more stable now! FYI: I live in a rural part of Pennsylvania's Lancaster County and I get every single channel 100% of the time.

They've added the Crackle Movies to the standard lineup now, where before it was only available to the iPhone crowd (jerks). Crackle has pretty decent films like Bram Stoker's Dracula, Starman, and as I'm typing this review it's "Reign Over Me" w/Adam Sandler.

The FloTV coverage of the 2010 World Cup soccer was superb, they actually added an extra channel to the lineup just for the World Cup. When the World Cup finals were done, the channel vanished the next day.

The battery life is stellar with 4 lights (full strength) for 3-4 hours. Usually I put it on a charger at night. Ready to go in the morning.

So...if you're reading this FloTV people, my only gripe is the lack of screen protection. For $199 price tag, theHTC people could toss in a cheap black nylon or neoprene sleeve.

UPDATE: July 18, 2010...this morning's newspaper had an advertisement for FloTV PTV350 at another "brick & mortar" chain for $149, so I wrote to Amazon.com to ask for a $48 refund since my purchase June 29th (19 days ago) and Amazon.com refused my request! The amount $197.64 paid on June 29th would not warrant a $48 matching refund, so I have returned the FloTV PTV350 to Amazon.com for a full $197.64 refund. Subsequently, I have purchased another FloTV from the aforementioned "brick & mortar" chain. I drove to the store, bought it, brought it home & activated it...works fine! I know I will get my $197.64 back from Amazon.com and I still have a FloTV but now I only paid $158 (PA 6% tax).

Maybe, someday, merchants will finally understand that customer satisfaction is essential for any/all repeat business. Really, in this scenario...would it have killed Amazon.com to provide a partial refund in the amount of $48.00? personally, I do not think so! I'm sure there are some who will disagree

New Update: (July 25, 2010)...the FloTV channel lineup has a new addition, it's the Discovery Channel! Just in time for "Shark Week"! Now if they would get rid of MTV and Nickolodeon? Oh well, I guess the children must have TV too

5 out of 5 stars Great Little TV   July 11, 2010

Great Little TV, it has great reception where I live and also while riding in a car around town. Well worth the price and battery life is like 4+ hours of on time.

4 out of 5 stars Sports on the Go   June 25, 2010

While one may dream with streaming video to your smartphone that still at least a year or two (in the US) ahead of us ... and when it's ready then we'll have to see how good the coverage is, plus the data plans and their caps. Flo TV is a true mobile TV. I mainly use it for my commute (a high-speed train from downtown San Diego to North County (Sorrento Valley)). I get reception with no interruptions, maybe some occasional fading, throughout my ride. I enjoy catching a game on the road or just watching ESPNEWS in the morning.

Because I have ESPN in the palm of my hands I decided to go without cable. I wish they could have more sports maybe some a-la-carte options. I was very disappointed that the NBA Finals were being broadcasted on ABC and Flo TV's ABC Mobile didn't play them, maybe because of copyright but was expecting this. Thumbs up for their FIFA WC2010 coverage!

I would say that as long as you have good coverage this box delivers. It's standard quality (close to HD), great sound, excellent battery life I have no complains. I use it at home and on the train/road.

The one thing that has been annoying me is that sometimes the device goes into sleep-mode and I have to tap the display to wake it up. Maybe it's a software bug that will be fixed (or has been). I'm strongly considering paying for the service after my 6-month trial is over.
